Trio wins Nobel Prize in Medicine for immune system discoveries

Stockholm [Sweden], October 7: The 2025 Nobel Prize in Medicine has been awarded to Mary E Brunkow, Fred Ramsdell and Shimon Sakaguchi for their groundbreaking research on the immune system, Sweden's Karolinska Institute said on Monday.
The Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine was awarded to Brunkow and Ramsdell of the United States and Japan's Sakaguchi "for their discoveries concerning peripheral immune tolerance." "The laureates identified the immune system's security guards, regulatory T cells, which prevent immune cells from attacking our own body," the institute said in a statement.
"Their discoveries have been decisive for our understanding of how the immune system functions and why we do not all develop serious autoimmune diseases," said Olle Kampe, chair of the Nobel Committee. (dpa)
