Oct 01, 2025

Madrid [Spain], October 1: The tail end of the storm which tore across the Atlantic as Hurricane Gabrielle continued to wreak havoc on the Spanish islands of Ibiza and Formentera on Tuesday. The AEMET weather service kept the highest red alert level in place on both islands until 4 pm (1400 GMT), with the newspaper Diario de Ibiza reporting considerable damage. Videos on social media showed cars being swept away by the floodwaters on Ibiza as well as in the Valencia region of mainland Spain. Ibiza's fire brigade had to respond to more than 20 calls on Tuesday morning alone. The newspaper El País and other outlets reported that the emergencies included people who were trapped in their cars or homes. Several roads were closed, including the access road to the airport and the ring road around Ibiza Town. According to AEMET, 74 millimetres of rain fell near the airport within a few hours, with power outages and fallen trees exacerbating the situation.
