Gunmen kill top local official in Afghanistan

Islamabad [Pakistan], July 29: Gunmen assassinated a senior Taliban government official in Afghanistan's north-eastern province of Badakhshan on Tuesday, the Afghan Ministry of Information and Culture said.
The ministry said Zabihullah Amiri, the director of information and culture for Badakhshan province, was attacked by two armed men while returning from Baharak district to the provincial capital, Fayzabad city. Amiri's security guards returned fire, killing one of the attackers and detaining the other, the ministry said, adding that an investigation was under way.
