UN chief calls for peaceful presidential poll in Congo

New York [US], March 20: UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Friday called for a peaceful presidential election in the Republic of the Congo, said his spokesman.
Ahead of Sunday's presidential election in the Congo, Guterres stressed the need to respect civil and political rights, notably the right to vote, said Stephane Dujarric, the spokesman, in a statement.
The secretary-general encouraged the media and social media users to promote social cohesion, and called on all stakeholders to refrain from hate speech or incitement to violence and resolve any disputes through dialogue and legal channels, said the statement.
Guterres stressed that peaceful, inclusive and credible elections are essential for sustainable peace in the Republic of the Congo, it said.
